Let's consider the main advantages that phytomodules have:

  1. Economical use of space. It is possible to harmoniously complement the interior with a true oasis even in a small room, since the plants are in a vertical state.
  1. Bright and original design. Phytostructures are considered a fashionable trend today, a prestigious element of VIP decoration. Possibility of decorating niches and columns using living plants.

A winter garden at your home or office without any hassle.

Types of structures

This decorative element has a variety of shapes and structures. Thanks to this, you can choose the type you like for a particular room. It is very comfortable. Their mounting and appearance also differ.

Floor phytomodules

Such structures are considered universal in their use and placement, since they do not need to be attached to the wall. They can be either one-sided or two-sided, and have the shape of a corner, stele, column, pyramid, cube, and so on. Wall and floor options will help divide the room into functional areas. An option installed on the floor will effectively cope with the role of a living partition, which will also please the eye. This kind of green wall is also good for its mobility. Since the floor option can be easily moved at any time, the territory can be transformed by dividing or combining the phytomodule.

Stationary phytowall

As is already clear by definition, a stationary phytowall can be firmly and permanently attached to the wall area. For structures larger than 5 square meters, it is possible to connect the irrigation system to the water supply. They can be placed on any surface - they frame door openings and partitions, mask a corner if necessary, highlight and emphasize decorative details. The design can be solid or modular. They do a great job main task- change the aesthetics of the interior, organically combining with different stylistic trends and concepts for decorating the room.

Plant selection

When choosing a particular plant for a given decorative element, you should take into account the conditions in which they will be kept, as well as how you can care for them.

Live indoor plants

Approximately 40 plants can be placed on one m2. This amount of them has a positive effect on the climate in the house or apartment. In addition, they can be placed in any public interior, the main thing is that the phytostructures in which they are planted have an automatic watering system.

Stabilized plants

They are natural and do not require care, watering, light or additional equipment, do not grow. This is an excellent solution for creating a wall in a public place, any commercial space such as an office or hotel. In addition, they are great for walls in a residential apartment, house, sauna, for example, if you need to reproduce a pattern from plants. In such conditions, the use of stabilized moss and plants is considered an ideal solution.

Stabilized flowers are not artificial plants or dried flowers. These are natural plants in which, as a result of special processing, the natural juice is replaced by an unusual solution based on glycerin. The technology makes it possible to subject all crops used by florists to such treatment, while the stabilized materials have strength and elasticity, and their appearance is no different from natural ones.

Today, the following types of moss are often used for projects:

  • green moss tussocks;
  • green moss in layers;
  • Scandinavian colored moss.

The advantages of stabilized crops include:

  • beauty, naturalness and bright appearance;
  • wider range of uses in finished products;
  • lack of essential care for them - they do not need to be constantly watered, do not require lighting, and are not susceptible to diseases;
  • easy to store and transport - there are no restrictions on temperature conditions and storage periods;
  • absence of seasonality factor;
  • environmentally friendly - do not pollute environment and are harmless to people and animals;
  • color stability, long time;
  • long shelf life for many years.

What kind of care is needed? In order for plants and compositions made from them to delight you with natural freshness for as long as possible, you should follow a few simple rules for handling them: avoid getting liquid on the leaves or in flowerpots and do not store them in rooms with high humidity (saunas, baths, swimming pools). A humidity range of 60 to 80 percent is optimal, and sudden changes in temperature should be avoided. The recommended temperature for stabilized flowers ranges from +5 to +35 degrees. It is necessary to avoid excessive dryness of the premises and direct sunlight into the module to prevent premature drying of the plantings.

Artificial plants

Artificial options are more suitable for decorating various events: exhibitions, presentations, conferences, meetings, corporate events and other special occasions. Such a module does not require any maintenance at all, can be disassembled and stored anywhere, used from time to time.

Homemade plant module for the wall

To make a phytowall you will need:

  • a piece of board measuring 55 by 20 cm and about a centimeter thick;
  • polyethylene film;
  • dense thick fabric;
  • construction stapler;
  • screw with marker;
  • scissors.

The board will be used as a rigid substrate, and the plastic film will provide waterproofing so that the wood does not absorb moisture and rot. To do this, the board should be wrapped in film and secured with staples on the reverse side, so that the ends of the board are covered with film. Everything can be done simply and without much effort. With your own hands, cut the boards into 3 equal parts and use a marker to draw lines.

Cut the fabric yourself to the width of the board and the length of 160 centimeters. Next, nail the fabric to the board using a stapler, with the marked lines showing you where the pocket is located. It should be nailed from top to bottom, and the pockets should be made in the form of an accordion.

After forming the pockets, secure them with staples; for reliability, you need to fix the pockets with zinc-coated screws, which are less susceptible to rotting. The remaining fabric is cut into shreds; they should be wrapped around the roots of the plantings. Then the plants are placed in pockets in accordance with the intended decor. The module is almost ready.

Since the phytowall does not contain automatic watering, you need to water the plantings in a timely manner, just do not overdo it, as excess water will certainly drain onto your floor. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to attach a rectangular flower pot underneath a picture such as a phytowall.

Caring for living phytowall

The following plants can be used:

  • small-leaved ferns;
  • sedum;
  • echeveria;
  • begonia;
  • ficus pumila;
  • sweet pea;
  • pansies and other low-growing flowers;
  • if desired, mint, thyme and other fragrant herbs.

The dimensions of the phytowall components also depend on the area of the room. If the room is spacious, then you can use large plants, and if it is small, then, accordingly, small and low-growing ones. It is advisable to combine flowers in one composition that require the same care and conditions.

When caring, it is important to promptly remove and replace dry or affected parts to prevent infection of the rest. If there is too little humidity in the room, you will need to additionally spray the plants with water. Proper pinching of crops plays a huge role so that certain flowers do not grow to incredible sizes.

Phytowall is a new and very stylish option for home or public decor. If necessary, you can invite a specialist who will install the look you like. However, making a phytowall with your own hands will not be difficult. This element will decorate any room and will be a small corner of wildlife.

And in Europe, the passion for vertical gardening has grown to huge phytowalls. They are also called living or green walls. What are they and how are they made?

What it is?

A phytowall is a large vertical structure attached to a wall or acting as one, densely planted with green vegetation.

What distinguishes a phytowall from small “green” paintings is the presence of a well-thought-out automatic watering system. Plants with soil are most often planted in pockets or slots.

Amelia B. Lima Wall.

Photos of this 40-meter wall in San Diego, the brainchild of landscape designer Amelia B. Lima, have been circulating on the Internet for a long time on various thematic resources. The basis of the wall is a metal frame on which sheets of plywood are fixed. The structure is lined with felt and has an entire automatic watering system. About 400 plants, including ferns, bromeliads, and various climbing plants, settled together on the wall.

Where to place the phytowall?

In our climate, it is not at all profitable to make huge phytowalls, as in the West. Especially in the fresh air. In conditions Middle zone In Russia, a living wall should be located in a bright room or be mobile and, in cold weather, easily move to a winter garden or greenhouse. Phytowall is an excellent way of vertical gardening of balconies and loggias (even very small ones) for city residents.

And if you really want to decorate the external facade of the house or a fence, we recommend limiting yourself to a small structure without hydroponics, decorated with annual plants.

How to make a phytowall with your own hands?

Today, prepared phytomodules from several manufacturers are already on sale, intended for both outdoor and indoor use. They are all based on hydroponics, the material is mineral wool.

But it’s quite possible to do it on your own. To do this, you need to know how the module should be arranged. We offer the following most common scheme:

Note that the fabric should not be simple, but durable, which will not rot in a couple of years (mostly synthetic felt is used). It should have pockets for planting plants in them. Watering can be simplified by placing a tube with holes horizontally only in the upper part of the structure.

The module is fixed to the wall at a distance of at least 2 cm from the wall surface necessary for air circulation.

We install a pipe and hose for irrigation, as well as a tray for collecting water with a submersible pump.

Plants with soil are planted in fabric pockets.

In addition to standard ways of arranging flowers in a room, there are also original options. For example, a green wall of plants is one of the vertical gardening techniques. main feature structures - cascades of greenery decorating the room.

The basis of a “living” wall is a vertical structure, stable and securely fastened. It has special boxes that are filled with soil. Selected plants are planted in them. The result is a solid green surface that looks very decorative.

All stands come in two types:

  1. Purchased design, developed by phytodesigners specifically for vertical gardening. This is the simplest and most convenient option that does not require any effort or time. They produce modules with a built-in automatic watering system, which is very convenient for those who are not used to regularly picking up a watering can. After purchasing, all that remains is to plant the plants and care for them.
  2. Homemade stand. If you have technical skills, you can try to make an analogue of purchased structures with your own hands. But “folk craftsmen” and flower lovers found a simpler option: making them from thick fabric. Pockets are sewn onto a large canvas, located in the desired sequence. True, the service life of a “rag” green wall in a room is short. Due to exposure to moisture, the fabric quickly becomes unusable.

Both options look decorative: their beauty depends primarily on the plants planted.

Place of a “living wall” in the interior

Phytodesign - popular destination in creating an interior. Living plants give rooms a special coziness and charm and lift your spirits. Proper placement of flowers makes them full-fledged elements of space decoration.

A green wall for the home is indispensable in small spaces where there is no free space for pots. It occupies height, not area. You can choose the size of the structure based on the dimensions of the room. They also use a phytopan - a “picture” of living plants that is hung on the wall.

If square footage allows, you can build large green walls in the room. This will be a real living corner of nature in the house.

Plants used for design are varied. These are both erect and hanging shoots. The leaves of decorative flowers can have bright and unusual colors (for example, coleus or calathea). There will also be room for flowering species at the stand.

Advantages of a green wall of plants in an apartment

What makes a green plant wall popular?

  1. Fresh flowers grouped in one place look very attractive and create the effect of being in nature. By combining types with each other, you can achieve unusual combinations. Solid walls made of ivy or moss look no less attractive.
  2. Plants enrich the air with oxygen necessary for brain function and release useful substances.
  3. Space saving.
  4. Green color calms the nerves, and the beautiful appearance of a stand with flowers evokes positive emotions.

Therefore, a “living wall” will be useful in any room.

How to make a green wall at home?

First you need to find a suitable place where a green wall of plants in the apartment will “feel” good and at the same time also decorate the room. It is recommended to give preference to a corner of the house where there is a sufficient amount of diffused light. Ornamental deciduous plants with green foliage will certainly suffer from direct sunlight: dry burns will appear. And species with variegated colors lose the brightness of their colors in the shade. That's why the best option- the golden mean.

Drainage is made in each compartment so that the roots do not rot, and then it is filled with nutritious soil. Now you can start planting!

Plant selection

You need to know not only how to make a green wall at home, but also choose the right plants for it. In vertical gardening, decorative foliage varieties are used mainly, creating an emerald carpet with bright accents or a fancy mosaic. For example, arrowroot, calathea, tradescantia, “stone rose”, calathea, small begonia, alocasia, compact ferns are suitable. If desired, you can also plant flowering plants. Anthuriums and spathiphyllums, hanging fuchsias are suitable.

The main requirement for flowers is that they must have a compact root system and not grow to large sizes. After all, this is how they will squeeze out their neighbors. From time to time, one specimen can be replaced with another, adjusting the composition, because each flower is in an isolated “pocket”.

A green wall of plants is a stylish and effective decoration for the interior of your home. You can make it yourself or order a ready-made module, and then fill it at your discretion.

Phytowall in the interior of the apartment

Humanity looked at itself from the outside and was horrified at how little naturalness there was around! Man turned his back on nature and forgot the beginning of all beginnings. But some bright minds are again inviting people to look into clear eyes lakes and place a real jungle or tropics in your apartment.

An interesting find in the field of home interior design is phytowall. In essence, it represents indoor plants grouped in one plane - vertical. This is a specially created space of fresh flowers for their comfortable placement in an apartment or country house.

Phytonovelty for the interior

Phytowalls have opened up the possibility of keeping indoor flowers in a favorable climate and the necessary humidity. You can set up such a phyto-island anywhere in your home, for example, install a phyto-wall in the living room or hang a living carpet on the wall behind the sofa.

But before you start work, you need to think through the entire project in detail so that the remaining parts of your house do not fall under the phytowall watering systems. You can build this simple structure with your own hands, but first you can order a small complex from “phytobuilders”, who will happily and knowledgeably act as experts for your future designs.

10 More Beautiful Vertical Gardening Ideas

For city apartments, which, as a rule, do not have large spaces, compact examples of residential landscaping are provided in the form of phytomodules or phytopictures. Unlike a stationary phytowall, this option is not large-scale and does not require entry into the water supply system. The creation of such structures will cost less and they have more placement options. For example, a small phyto-picture can easily be placed on a desk.

Typical phytowall project

Stationary options are designed for large rooms, where placing a wall of fresh flowers will be appropriate and justified. Materials for phytowall:

Plastic gutter – 4 pieces
Attachments for gutter and lining
Wooden slats – 2 pieces (length up to 200 cm)
Dowels, screws
A simple pencil and ruler
Drilling tool
Hand file

Slots are drilled in the gutters to drain irrigation water. The bars are attached along the wall from top to bottom in parallel, at a distance of no more than half a meter. End plates are fixed to the beams, and gutters are placed in them. Plants here can be arranged in two ways: directly in pots or seedlings in the ground.
To avoid dampness in the room, the phytowall is placed at a distance of at least 5 cm from the wall surface. Installing a phytowall is not difficult, the main thing is that it pleases the eye and brings a minimum of hassle.

Sowed the seeds, a wall grew

The founder of green walls, Patrick Blank, developed and created more than a dozen variants of phytowalls in his homeland. In such walls it is good to use plants in seeds and “grow” your own living wall.

As an expert in this field, he recommends creating a structure from lightweight and durable materials based on a metal frame mounted on the wall. A system of thin pipes for watering plants is attached to a frame covered with waterproof material, which is connected to a submersible pump at the bottom. The tubes are hidden under a layer of fabric pockets, placed in a strict order, so that future plants can form the desired visual image. The pockets are filled with plants that you choose for your living picture.

You need to care for the phytowall carefully and regularly. If you have used the services of professionals, then all you have to do is monitor the operation of the equipment. And if your option is self-service, then caring for the green wall will require a lot of effort and special care from you:

  1. It is necessary to monitor the frequency of watering
  2. Maintain air humidity (spray plants in hot weather)
  3. Monitor the cleanliness and freshness of soil and solutions for watering flowers
  4. Pinching plants in a timely manner, preventing them from growing
  5. Get rid of missing shoots, replacing them with new ones
  6. Adjust light level

Let’s hope that the idea of a phytowall will firmly occupy its niche in a person’s life, helping him more often turn to his roots, revive and replenish his strength from nature.

Do-it-yourself phytowalls and phytomodules are an original version of environmentally friendly design. By creating corners of living nature inside a living space, a person begins to feel like a part of it.

Phytodecor not only brings beauty and attractiveness, but also gives food for thought, refreshes the air, and creates a unique bouquet of aromas.

All this can be created with your own hands, having understood the principles of plant decoration.

Phytowall is interior decoration through vertical gardening. Its essence lies in the fact that plants are planted on the wall surface in a certain order, which with their leaves, stems and flowers create a unique color design.

Such a decorative element can be placed in a room for any purpose - from the hallway to the kitchen.

Types of decorative details

The phytowall is made up of individual integral parts - phytomodules. They are a structure of cells combined into a single composition. In principle, a phytowall can be formed as one phytomodule or assembled from several elements. In addition, the modules can only partially cover the wall, harmonizing with another type of decor.

The following options are available:

  1. Vertical type phytowall. This is a stationary composition in which plants are located in their cells (niches) on the wall, covering its entire surface.
  2. Green painting or small phytomodules installed on the wall in the form of a painting.
  3. Modular photo wall. It is most often used for temporary zoning of a room and can be disassembled or moved to another location.
  4. Ceiling phytomodules, phytoceiling. In this composition, plants are fixed to the ceiling, from where they hang down or are directed along the ceiling surface.

Which option to use in the interior depends on the purpose and size of the room, lighting, and general design style. Much depends on the type of plants used and their color shade.

Lifespan

When using phytomodules to decorate an apartment, it is important to consider their viability.

The lifespan of the composition depends on the selected plants, proper care for them, temperature and humidity conditions, and lighting.

When forming it, it is important to use plants that are long-lived and not too sensitive to changes in external conditions.

Particular attention should be paid to the presence of drafts and unexpected freezing.

It should be noted that the average lifespan of a phytowall is 6.5-7 years. Often plants do not dry out, but simply age naturally, losing their decorative properties. Replenishment and change of composition should be immediately provided for when forming modules.

Pros of using green modules

Phytowalls have a number of undeniable advantages, both in terms of aesthetic perception and from a practical point of view:

  • performing the functions of a natural air conditioner and air purifier in the room;
  • the possibility of formation in any room, regardless of size and purpose;
  • environmental cleanliness and benefits for human health;
  • expansion of design capabilities;
  • increasing the vitality and mood of residents and guests;
  • the possibility of zoning the premises, masking defects and communications.

When creating plant compositions, it is necessary to remember that even indoor flowers can be allergens. If one of the family members has hypertrophied sensitivity, then it is better to refuse phytomodules.

Use Cases

The following options and features of using phytowalls can be especially noted:

  1. Flower boxes. They are made from stabilized plants from which the juice has been removed and filled with a glycerin solution. These flowers are very stable, maintaining turgor in the vertical direction.
  2. Phytomodules with drip irrigation and humidity control. Such modules are made of plastic (usually PVC), which is sealed on the surface to prevent it from getting damp.
  3. Plants are selected according to this principle - general background on which bright inclusions are located. For the background, ivy, fern, tradescantia, dracaena, zebrina, and chlorophytum are used. Brightness can be provided by orchids, succulents, arrowroots, vriesias, and fittonias.
  4. Compositions with other details. Such solutions are popular - mirror elements, shells, baguettes, lamps, imitation waterfalls.

There are many plant design options. You can vary different shades of foliage and leaf sizes, or introduce bright flowers into the composition. It is better when all elements are subordinated to a single plot.

What is needed to arrange a phytowall?

Work on creating a phytowall begins with allocating an appropriate place, developing a project and selecting plants, selecting additional elements. It’s best to make a preliminary drawing to scale with real color combination. Next the wall needs mark out for specific phytomodules.

To install the composition you will need the following materials:

  1. Frame in the form of a frame with lathing made of plastic or aluminum profiles.
  2. Cloth covering the entire surface made of waterproof material (PVC, polypropylene, etc.).
  3. Tubes for arranging drip irrigation.
  4. Material for making cells (pockets). Felt is often used, which is not subject to rotting.
  5. Planting soil. The best option is a mixture of hydroponics and.
  6. Tray for receiving spilled water.

Watering a plant at a height of 1.5-2 m presents certain difficulties. To ensure water supply, it is recommended to use a submersible aquarium pump.

How to do it yourself?

A typical phytowall is assembled in the following order:

  1. Assembling and securing the frame frame. Installation of vertical posts and horizontal jumpers. The installation step of the racks is 50-70 cm.
  2. Cut the canvas according to the frame and mark it for placing plants according to the project. Sewing pockets for planting plants.
  3. Fastening the canvas to the frame using a furniture stapler or by gluing.
  4. Installing an irrigation tube above each pocket and linking them into a single watering system. Pump installation.
  5. Filling the soil into the pockets. Planting.

After completing the formation of the phytowall, you need to check the correct location of the plants. You can change it and replant it during the first 3-4 days, when rooting has not finished.

Proper care

Phytowall needs constant care, even when using non-capricious plants. It is important for them to ensure temperature and humidity conditions. If watering is done manually, it must be done regularly. When automatically watering, you should monitor the correctness and sufficiency of the process in the initial period.

It is necessary to periodically check the condition of the foliage. Dead and dry leaves should be removed immediately. We should not forget about mineral fertilizing, which differs somewhat depending on the type of plant. As the greenery grows, planning is carried out. Excess shoots are cut out. Diseases of flowers should not be allowed.

The most simple examples- this is growing different indoor vines. Now a landscape company will offer to use a special design - a phytomodule, in which any plant can be planted, forming vertical “green” areas.

Where and why are phytowalls and phytomodules used?

Phytowall is used to decorate a regular wall, its sections, and also as
mobile partitions for zoning the territories of rooms. The design of the phytomodule can be different - pyramids, cubes, steles, which can be installed in niches, thus organizing beautiful solutions for “difficult” places in the interiors.

You can also use a phyto-picture, which will become the center of compositions in any room, attracting the eye. If the house has columns, then using a green module will be an excellent solution for their decoration.

The advantages of this solution:

Disadvantages include the high price offered by interior landscaping companies.

Varieties of vertical facades

A variety of vertical facades simply means ways of arranging and fastening the constituent plants.

Vertical facades are:

  • Modular facades– these are neat plastic or metal boxes or special textile pockets. Plants must be planted separately in each pocket for the phytowall, and then the elements are grouped. This option can be compared to a constructor.
  • Carpet gardens– basically a solid fabric is used, on which there are many textile pockets. For the base, polymer fiber is used.
  • Pallets- a wooden structure in which various plants are planted. If you look at it in appearance, they seem to be peeking out between the slats.
  • Paintings or panels. - to create such a masterpiece, a metal, polymer mesh or containers with plastic cells are used. After planting all the plants, the overall composition resembles a painting.

Making a phytowall with your own hands

Despite the fact that this design seems complicated to you, it is still possible to make this structure with your own hands. But first, let's try to consider in detail the structure of which the phytowall will consist.

  1. Frame- the base on which the phytowall will be attached. This frame is necessary to provide an air gap and protect the wall from the appearance of unpleasant mold.
  2. Waterproof material(it can be any plastic: PVC, polypropylene, polycarbonate or thick polyethylene), protects the wall from moisture penetration onto the wall.
  3. Irrigation system- used on the principle of hydroponics (growing plants in artificial media with the complete absence of soil), spot watering is also possible (as indicated in the figure), and it can be brought to each plant, or in a simpler version, use only one tube, which will be located at the top of the phytowall and supply moisture to the entire surface of the phytowall.
  4. Canvas with pockets made of dense and durable textile fabric that is not subject to rotting.
  5. Submersible automatic pump-installed to supply water from the pan to the plants.
  6. Pallet installed for collecting and using water.

Tools for building a green phytowall

Now that we have figured out the structure of the module, let's talk about the tools that you may need for the job.

  • a metal lattice is the basis of our design; its dimensions will completely depend on the size of the phytowall you will make.
  • wooden panels measuring 10 x 5 x 5 cm to mount the structure on the wall you will need 4 pieces;
  • oilcloth or thick film;
  • jute fabric (a natural, eco-friendly material with a wide range of uses. The fabric is made from the fibers of the plant of the same name - jute, which has water-repellent properties, strength, and breathability.) - the same size as the lattice, add 15-20 cm on each side;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • saw;
  • dowels, angles and screws.

The construction of a vertical facade consists of several stages:

First stage- wood processing and making a wooden frame. First you need to make blanks from wooden blocks, 2 long on the sides and 1 short on the top. To fasten the structure you need to make holes for screws. Next, the wooden structure is further treated with a special waterproof substance or painted. After complete drying, the parts of the wooden structure are connected and a mesh is stretched over them (the size of the mesh must correspond to the size of the resulting structure).

The second important stage is treating the surface of the wall to protect it from dampness, mold and plant roots; to do this, attach a film to the wall, then a jute fabric so that the bars for fastenings are inside and there is free space between the two layers of fabric.

Third stage—we set the framework. Fastening is done using construction angles and dowels. After installing the frame on the wall, it is advisable to carefully remove excess film and fabric. Now is the time to fill the soil and plant the plants you like.

How to plant plants correctly

Suitable for vertical interior gardening using phytomodule
almost any plant of medium and small size. The basis or “soil” for planting the plant is sphagnum moss. It is now sold in any flower shops. This moss absorbs well and can retain moisture for quite a long time.

Thanks to its bactericidal properties, it will prevent fungal disease. To plant flowers in cells, you need to remove them from the pots and completely shake off all the soil. Then cut off the tips of the roots by a couple of centimeters. The remaining soil is washed off in a basin of water. After this procedure, the roots of the plants are wrapped in damp moss and inserted in this form into the cells.

If there is room left, moss is also placed on top. All other cells are filled in the same way. You should try to plant all the plants so that the spaces between them are not visible at all. Beautiful “green” canvases are formed.
