Fashion of the 2000s. Fashion trends of the 2000s and what happened to them now

We've collected 15 of the craziest looks Russian stars originally from the 2000s!

Philip Kirkorov

The harsh Russian winter spares no one, so Philip prudently decided to warm himself, but was too carried away by the process - in the resulting outfit, the singer could well have played in the film “The Revenant.”

Valery Leontyev

Popular

Sequins, a dubious vest over a naked body and red pointed shoes already raise a lot of questions. But then you notice a woman’s pink sandal tied to Valery’s trousers...

Natasha Koroleva

A unicorn fur coat, a mesh top, a push-up and a belt buckle that can be used as a sinker while fishing - Natasha Koroleva knew a lot about 2000s glamour!

Yulia Volkova

A plush jumpsuit, white cowboy boots and a couple of transferred cans of self-tanning - the image is still the same, but in this rare photo we can see the “natural” Yulia before many body modifications.

Ksenia Sobchak

Once upon a time, Ksenia was considered the “Russian Paris Hilton,” and her glamorous images were a real talk of the town, as was, again, her love for self-tanning.

Masha Malinovskaya

Perhaps Masha wanted to wear a crop top, but there wasn’t one at home - she had to pull up her sweater all evening.

Tatiana Ovsienko

Yes, it's true - in the 2000s, it was fashionable to wear a skirt over jeans. And we are happy that this fashion remained in that time.

Alena Apina

And here are the lingerie style lessons from the “zeros” from Alena Apina. But the main thing here is not the dress, but the sudden pink boutonniere on the neck and boots with ultra-long toes.

Shura

Shura delighted fans with very eclectic outfits in the 1990s. In the 2000s, the singer continued to shock the audience.

Masha Rasputina

A great complementary illustration to our selection of the worst celebrity outings in Leopard.

Lolita

Sometimes it’s worth following the “it’s either your chest or your legs” rule without hesitation. And also don’t hesitate to choose your legs.

Maxim

Another thing from the “zeroes” that, fortunately, has gone out of fashion forever is a variety of breeches. Especially shiny and with lace.

Anita Tsoi

In this image, everything came together so eeriely that in the end it even looks frighteningly harmonious: a dress with a pattern reminiscent of Khokhloma, high boots made from the paws of a red mammoth and the carpet on which Anita is posing.

Irina Saltykova

There can never be too many labels, Irina decided, especially Chanel, so she didn’t waste time on trifles and literally hung herself with the famous logo.

In the early 2000s, fashion was set by American pop singers: Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and others. The fashion world was taken over by nudity: clothes were made in such a way as to leave as much of the body as possible exposed. It was then that the bottom edge of fashionable T-shirts rapidly moved up, and the waist of trousers and skirts, on the contrary, moved down.

2. Bright colors in clothes

How to make sure that they pay attention to you if everyone around you is half naked, like you? Add bright colors to your clothes! This is exactly what the girls decided in 2001, when tops, skirts and trousers in the most tasteless colors became one of the most current trends.

3. Fur clothes with a light dress

The trend is quite strange, but many people like it. Wearing fur items of clothing - for example, a vest, a short fur coat or a detachable collar - with a light short dress became fashionable at the very beginning of the 2000s. It is noteworthy that the combination exclusively with faux fur was welcomed.

4. Tight short skirts

The year 2003 was marked by a trend towards tighter clothing. At that time, short, tight skirts that barely covered the buttocks were at the peak of popularity. Bright colors in basic clothing were no longer relevant, but they still had to be part of the look - in the form of stylish accessories.

5. Capri pants

The fashion for capri pants received a revival in 2003. Most often they were used in a sporty style, gradually becoming part of the romantic style. Fortunately, there were a great variety of cut types for these cute trousers back then.

6. Flared jeans

Closer to 2005, on world podiums and daily life Fashionistas are embracing flared jeans. Later, stylists would call this trend one of the most successful finds of the 2000s. Due to the fact that the cut of these jeans allows you to correct almost any figure imperfections, this model is still relevant today.

7. Sports style

The heyday of this style was marked by 2004-2005. During this period of fashion history, sequined tops were paired with tracksuit trousers. Wide T-shirts, overalls with lowered straps and sports dresses have become popular.

8. Romantic style tunics

We remember 2006 for updating romantic style. Tunics embroidered with ethnic patterns and short dresses trimmed with lace came into fashion. The most popular fabric that year was delicate chiffon, often with floral prints. It's amazing how such gentle trends in women's fashion managed to be combined in one season with cowboy style - jeans trimmed with fringe, Western hats and high boots.

9. High-waisted dresses

The style of 2007-2008 is characterized by rigor and conciseness. Quite restrained colors have come into fashion: white, black, gray. Those who wanted bright elements image, they could diversify their toilet with scarlet and classic red. Dresses and skirts with a very high waist, as well as platform shoes, were especially loved by fashionistas.

10. Print on outerwear

What else do we remember about the end of the 2000s? Certainly unprecedented trends in outerwear. Coats with floral patterns, discreet patterns, embroidery and even appliqués have become trendy. Nevertheless, despite the apparent diversity, the general direction of fashion development by the 2010s was restraint and elegance. Which, however, does not deprive fashion lovers of room for experimentation!

Russian fashion of the 2000s largely continued the traditions of the previous decade. Everything foreign was in trend; the terms and rules of the “fashion game” were dictated by pop culture. It was simply impossible to keep up with changing trends. However, some general rules still there were.

The trendsetters of that period were such young American stars as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez. With their light hand, the image of a young girl-nymphet came into fashion. A craze began for short “school” skirts, low-rise trousers and jeans, and crop tops. Opening your legs, belly, and chest has become simply necessary. Even bulky knitted sweaters have become incredibly short and turned into something similar to a crop top. Also, fur items appeared in the wardrobes of fashionistas, which were combined with light summer dresses. The neon colors of the outfits continued this “ball” of bad taste and anti-style.

Besides the fact that the clothes were short and brightly colored, they were also completely tight. Sexy skirts and boxer tops made it possible to see all the curves of the female body. Real propaganda of “porn chic”.

During the same period of time, sports and androgynous styles began to be popularized. Russia was no exception to the rule. Girls and boys began to wear oversized jeans, shirts, stretched sweaters, leather jackets, and heavy boots. Men's and women's fashion were leveled out and merged into something common called “unisex”.

Capris were incredibly popular. They came into fashion somewhere around 2003, and at first their purpose was purely sporty, but then designers began to create these things with a slight touch of romanticism.

Romanticism came into fashion in 2006 and was marked by the massive love of all Russian women for tunics. Which perfectly hid figure flaws. The younger and more advanced paired them with jeans, cowboy boots and hats. Also, at the peak of romanticism, high-waisted dresses, which are still popular today, and outerwear with floral prints began to appear on the shelves.

It must be said that Russian fashion of the 2000s merged with European and American fashion thanks to the mass media. TV and the Internet actively promoted Western style. The Russian people could only imitate, although this imitation was limited by the financial capabilities of many millions of citizens.

Style icons, so to speak, during that period were such “socialites” as Ksenia Sobchak, Masha Malinovskaya, Oksana Robski, Masha Tsigal and others. Their style, or rather the lack of it, was replicated in the press and was perceived by many ordinary people as a kind of norm that should be copied.

We can confidently summarize that fashion in Russia during this period did not exist at all. There was a shocking mixture of styles in the conditions of a shortage of quality products and, first of all, fabrics, as well as in the absence of domestic, original designers. During this period, mass migration of young people abroad began. They brought from there what they could afford to buy with the relatively little money they had. This is how the first Valentino, Lagerfeld, Mustang, Fendi, Emanuel, Ungaro appeared on Russian streets. Young people experimented and created new trends, such as sneakers with feminine long maxi skirts. Also during this period, second-hand stores were in trend, where you could find very cheap, but designer items from old collections.

A little later, mass-market stores such as Topshop, Zara, and Primark appeared in Russia. There is an opportunity to dress stylishly, fashionably and relatively inexpensively.

This is a period of design and stylistic experiments that led to the emergence of a modern, very restrained style.

The only successful trend of this period can be considered flared jeans, which are still popular in Russia today. They sat perfectly on good female figures(and they also looked good on not very good ones). Although by the end of the decade one could already observe the predominance of minimalism and constructivism, white, gray and black colors in clothing. Then they began to pay attention again to the quality of fabric and cut.

Despite all the above criticism, the fashion for the “zeros” is returning and this is noticeable in everything. By the way stars and young girls dress, by what Fashion houses and designers offer. This “comeback” is connected, first of all, with the fact that the fashion of the 2000s was not imposed by someone, it came “from the people”, strengthened and became popular. And although nouveau riche chic, porn chic, grunge, and R’n’B style will not return completely, some of their elements will experience a rebirth and adapt to new realities. And this applies not only to clothes. Nowadays, long, often false nails, corrugated curls, small braids, bright makeup, and jewelry are back in fashion. Look at how Adele, Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry, Bianca or Nyusha dress. Leopard print is back in fashion, as are fishnet tights. Fashion is cyclical, it comes and goes, giving birth to trends that, unlike fashion, remain forever.

And since even professionals are sometimes unable to predict future trends, we suggest you get a little nostalgic and at the same time find out what was fashionable in the year you were born. After all, it is possible that these very iconic items will appear again in our wardrobes in the coming years!

1970

Elegance and femininity are perfectly combined in this image of Jacqueline Kennedy. The First Lady of the United States was not only one of the main fashionistas of the 70s, but also quickly became a real trendsetter. If Jackie's style is close to you, get a camel-colored robe coat, cropped gloves and a messenger bag - the classics always “work” for you.

1971

Flared flares, vertical stripes and, of course, wide-brimmed hats - the bohemian 70s make themselves felt even after almost 50 years!

1972

Mick Jagger's ex-wife Bianca became one of the main trendsetters of those years, and one of her favorite wardrobe items was a men's-style trouser suit. We also owe it to Bianca for its popularization.

1973

Every year, flared jeans and trousers become wider and wider, which fits perfectly with the huge platforms and heels that have become fashionable.

1974

But the 70s were not remembered by all fashionistas for their costumes alone—in this decade, emphatic romantic femininity also ruled the roost.

1975

The whole world is watching the end Vietnam War, and this cannot but affect all areas of life, including fashion - girls increasingly prefer miniskirts, sundresses and high-heeled sandals.

1976

The premiere of "Charlie's Angels" was a huge success and, as expected, made its own adjustments to the top hot trends - shirt dresses, midi skirts and blouses with bows are in fashion.

1977

The 80s are approaching, and leg warmers, Lurex and sweater dresses are making their way into fashion.

1978

The image of a “business woman” is becoming more and more relevant - girls wear men’s shirts, vests, trousers and formal skirts.

1979

1980

Gold dresses and shoes - there’s never too much sparkle, and Mick Jagger’s wife (albeit a different one) again becomes a trendsetter - supermodel Jerry Hall, who literally personifies a luxurious bohemian girl.

1981

Aerobics, Jane Fonda and Heather Locklear in swimsuits and leg warmers - the early 80s became the “harbinger” of today’s “sports boom,” including in terms of fashion.

1982

Lace collars, velvet and voluminous shoulders - the world is already starting to fall in love with Princess Diana and her style.

1983

Polka dots of all sizes, accentuated wasp waists, wide shoulders and hats - the true spirit of the 80s!

1984

Oversized sweaters dropped on one shoulder and the ubiquitous leggings were “available” to every fashionable girl of that time. If you don't believe us, ask your mom, she'll confirm!

1985

Backcombs, jeans, the same oversized sweaters and voluminous leather jackets. And, of course, the evergreen 80s hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”!

1986

Open shoulders, “ballet” skirts and radical short haircuts— the approach of 2000s fashion is becoming more and more obvious.

1987

Closed-up clothes are coming into fashion (fashionistas literally button up all the buttons) and huge jewelry that will not leave the trend list any time soon.

1988

Every girl had a bright suit with a skirt in those years, and they wore it not with pumps, as you might think, but... with sneakers and white socks!

1989

The era of supermodels is coming, and fashion is still dominated by massive jewelry (and several at once in one look - this is ideal), gloves, berets and black colors in combination with brighter ones.

1990

Crazy colors go to temporary rest, giving way to the formula “white top, black bottom.” However, multi-level necklaces and chain belts do an excellent job as accents in images.

1991

Huge “masculine” blazers, natural makeup and gold hoop earrings—the approach of grunge is becoming more and more noticeable.

1992

Versace, Versace and once again Versace - the Italian fashion house literally “crushes” all trends and sets fashion. High sleek ponytails, a combination of black and gold and deliberate sexuality are becoming the main trends.

1993

But simultaneously with sexuality, rave comes into fashion - a subculture that instantly wins the hearts of schoolchildren and students.

1994

While the Versace family was advocating sex, John Galliano was promoting grunge - fashionistas were just as eager to acquire plaid shirts and ripped jeans as they were to acquire provocative dresses.

1995

In the mid-90s, radical minimalism began to return to fashion - a simple cut and black and white color scheme immediately found many fans.
