Hip hop dance directions. What is hip-hop culture

Hip hop music

Hip-hop music consists of two main elements: rap music  (rhythmic recitative with clearly marked rhymes) and rhythm set by dJ  although there are frequent compositions without vocals. In this combination performers rap music  call themselves " um» ( english MC  - Microphone Controller or Master of Ceremony ). Some MCs turn their texts into real intricate riddles (for example, Ghostface Killa says that she purposely seeks to compose such rhymes so that no one understands, except him, what is at stake). The task of one or more DJs is to program the rhythm on drum machine , sampling  (using fragments of foreign compositions, especially bass and synthesizer parts), manipulations with vinyl records and sometimes beatboxing (vocal imitation of the drum machine rhythm). On stage, musicians are often accompanied by a dance ensemble.

Currently, hip-hop is one of the most commercially successful types of modern entertainment music and is stylistically represented by a variety of trends within the genre.

Hip Hop Directions

Many people think that hip-hop is just music and a special style of clothing. Hip-hop, as such, is divided into many directions. Each direction is quite independent and carries its own meaning. That is, hip-hop, this is CULTURE. It can not be properly explained in words, you can not touch and smell. Hip-hop for all different and individual. For everyone, it means something different. Suppose two people consider themselves part of hip-hop culture. One madly loves to spin on his head, and the second to draw on the neighbour's fence inscriptions dad's car enamel in cans. Nothing connects them ... Almost ... That is, hip-hop, this is not something specific. This is a culture that includes directions, for example:

  • Rap, Funk, Bitbox (Musical)
  • Break dance, Kramp (Dance)
  • Graffiti (pictorial)

Each person can do both rap, graffiti and break dance. All this is perfectly combined into one word HIP-HOP.

1970s

Hip-hop originated in the African-American and Latin American environment Bronx  , district New york  in the first half of the 1970s At the time, it was party music that was created by DJs (called abbreviated " dJs "), Who worked in a very primitive then technology sampling  : it often came down to a repetition of the musical loss of someone else's dance composition. The first " um  "Were literally typical entertainer  (“Master of Ceremony” - that is, MC for short; this abbreviation then absorbed many other meanings), they represented DJs, and also supported the attention of the audience with vigorous shouts and whole tirades. (It should be noted that Jamaica  a similar manner of execution was developed at the turn of the 1960-1970s. thanks to the emerging technique dub.)

The popularity of music at these parties led to the fact that local DJs began to sell on hand cassettes with recorded "live" "sets" (performance program), which skillfully mixed rhythms and bass parts taken from tracks in styles disco  and funk  on top of which mc recited rap. It was a purely amateur occupation, and during that period (1974-1978) there were no studios and official releases of rap records.

The situation changes radically, when in the early fall of the year in USA  Rapper’s Delight single released The sugarhill gang  and makes a splash in the American popular music market. The single is considered to be the first recording of rap despite the fact that a few more slightly earlier songs challenge the glory of the championship; however, it was precisely because of this 11-minute composition that the American public and the media learned about the phenomenon of hip-hop, though, despite the popularity of the song (the single sold out in 8 million copies), most agreed that it was a musical joke, from which further will not work. The song was written by a Negro group, collected almost by accident a day before recording. Rhythm (classic disco) and the bass guitar part was taken from the then hit Chic "Good Times", a rap was performed on top of three em-si. One of the advantages of the composition is that already in this first rap of the year typical rhymes were given, as well as the fundamental themes of hip-hop: details of everyday life, competitions, e-si, sex, wording and ostentatious vanity.

1980s

At the very beginning of the 1980s. among rappers there was a strong interest in European electronic pop music, - first of all, to Gary Newman, who were widely sampled, whose technological discoveries, along with the developed " breakbeat  "- broken, completely new rhythm, - contributed to the separation of hip-hop from rhythmic dependence on disco  and funk . The breakbeat rhythm in combination with the Jamaica technique developed by that time dub  brought hip-hop to a new level (see electro). Early hip hop innovators were Curtis Blow, Africa Bambata , Grandmaster Flash  and Whodini, namely their records of 1980–84. (attributed now to the "old school of hip-hop") were decisive for the formation of the genre. Music magazine Rolling stone   named the most influential composition in hip-hop history “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash (1982).

The baton of innovation picked up teams Run DMC  Mantronix Beastie boys  , each of which brought their discoveries to hip-hop: Run DMC  they played minimal drum-machine breakbeat, Mantronix received recognition for its revolutionary mixing technique, and Beastie boys  combined elements punk rock  and rap and became the first white rap group to achieve commercial success. Rap songs were recorded and punk teams, for example, The clash  (their single "The Magnificent Seven" 1980  Intensively spun on Negro radio stations New york), brought them cult status among the audience, not only in the Negro environment. The musical side of hip-hop became more complicated: the modern stage in its development begins with the release of 1987  The album "Paid in Full" duet Eric B. & Rakim. By the end of the 1980s rap music has reached a level of popularity comparable to rock , country music  and pop, and such large institutions of the music industry as the American Academy of Recording, the head of " Grammy  ", And American Music Awards  at 1988  established categories for rap. The embodiment of this popularity in America has become MC Hammer , Kris kross  et al., who addressed their music to a wider audience of listeners, which, in turn, gave impetus to the development of more uncompromising genres in hip-hop.

Since the late 1980s, hip-hop has been fueling stylistically and technologically modified thanks to it. rhythm and blues  ("New Jack Swing", "hip-hop-soul").

1990s

At the turn of the 1990s, with the filing of the NWA, scandalously known for its defiantly scabrous and aggressive texts, gangsta rap, which reflects the criminal life of the black ghettos, becomes popular. The most influential hip-hop figure of the decade has become a former NWA participant named Dr. Dre  ; he introduces a new style gi-funk  whose most prominent representative was his protégé Snoop dogg  . A few years later the trio members The fugees his album "The Score" clearly demonstrated the possibilities for integrating hip-hop with other musical directions - rhythm and blues , reggae  and even jazz  . They are one of the first hip-hop projects that have gained wide popularity outside the United States.

In the mid-1990s, there was a rivalry between gangsta rappers from the West and East coasts of the United States, which ended with the death of prominent representatives on each side - Tupac Shakur  and Notorious B.I.G.  The tragic outcome of this confrontation gave rise to such a broad discussion in the media that during almost 1997  rappers occupied the top of the US charts. This period is characterized by intensive commercialization of hip-hop, which is usually associated with the name Puffa daddy  - a rapper who promoted a glamorous lifestyle and built his compositions on a very extensive quotation of the pop hits of previous decades. At the end of the 20th century, a white rapper gained fame. Eminem  who tried to revive the charge of provocation and social protest.

In our time, there are all sorts of new dance styles, but the popularity remains unchanged until now. The main elements of this dance are all kinds of jumps, falls, stunts, as well as harmonious movements to the rhythmic melody. Hip-Hop is considered to be a very dynamic style, with a particular focus on certain specific parts of the body, as well as movements from ordinary everyday life.

It should be noted that the birthplace of the Hip-Hop dance was America, and its first dancers were African Americans. The history of dance began in the South Bronx, which is considered the most dysfunctional and dangerous area of New York, in 1967. It is this place that Kul Herk visited - one of the founders of culture.

The main merit of Kul-Herk is that at parties, which he himself organized, he began to try to read the recitative to the sound of records played by him, which later developed into a concept like Rap. In addition, he periodically used breaks (musical breaks) in his music, thanks to which the dancers, going into a circle, could demonstrate their dancing skills.

Kempi O.

Hip-hop is a cultural movement, which originated in the 70s. the last century in one of the black neighborhoods of New York, known and popular all over the world. It combines many things: music, dancing, visual art (graffiti), fashion trends in clothing, thinking and lifestyle. Initially, hip-hop was an independent and non-commercial form of expressing young people through music and dance, over time it turned into a sphere, coupled with multi-million dollar gararars and expensive “insignia”.

CoolHerc

The founding father of the Hiphop culture is an immigrant from Jamaica - Clive Campbellknown in the musical environment as CoolHerc. He came to the South Bronx (the African-American ghetto of New York) in 1967, and became known for arranging yard parties, in which he was now called DJ or MC (master of the ceremony). At one of these parties in 1973, he first used the technique of “cutting in” parts of one composition to another.

He inserted a piece of James Brown's GIVE IT UP OR TURN IT LOOSE while playing a Michael Winner Bongo Rock song.

"Give it up or turn it loose":

This innovation was very much enjoyed by the youth, who immediately thought of using these inserts (breaks) for a certain type of dance using various acrobatic elements, which became known as break dance.

Grandmaster flash

Joseph Saddler lived in the South Bronx and studied electrical engineering. But much more he felt for music. From adolescence, he experimented with daddy’s vinyl records, and once came to the conclusion that the chopper could revolutionize music. He was the first to touch the records with his hands as they played, and manipulated the sound.

One of the most famous examples of "mixing" can be the Grandmaster Flash track Adventures of the Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel.

"Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel":

Afrika bambaataa

A native of the South Bronx, known as one of the first rappers in musical history.

He was the leader of the Black Spades, one of the most notorious and cruel factions of the time. When he directed his energy into the mainstream of a new culture, he led many acquaintances with him. This led to the transformation of Black Spades into a new organization aimed at self-development and global peace. From that moment to the present day, under the name Zulu Nation, it thrives in the peaceful sphere of hip-hop culture.

Bambaataa and his followers dramatically reduced the crime rate in unstable areas of New York. If earlier poor youth solved all problems between themselves by fights and clashes, now conflicts were solved in dance fights (battles), competitions in turnips, and even graffiti.

1982 Africa made a tour of Europe, making a huge contribution not only to the spread of hip-hop, but also to enrich it with new directions, such as "electro" (with whom Baambaat met in Germany). After mixing electro with hip-hop, the composition “Planet Rock” appeared, which soon became very popular.

Along with DJing and closely associated with it, the hip-hop culture also developed. Break dance, “broken dance”, was born at the same time when Kul Herk made his first “trademark” insert. This style was absolutely not like the popular dances of previous generations. However, you can trace the history of its formation. In 1969, the dancer Don Campbell invented a kind of dance in which the dancer seems to be fixated in a certain position for some time (“ticking”), and in rhythmic choruses the body moves with free waves (“waiving”). This was called cambeloking, and is now better known as simply locking.

Much in this direction was adopted from national cultures, for example, in the Losangeles pantomime “boogie”, echoes of Negro culture are heard.

In the mid-70s, Lokotron, John and Shabadu created a form of dance that we now call hip-hop: the combined styles of “locking” and “popping”.

At the same time, the style “robot” appears and begins to develop.

The first who managed to escape from the crowd and demonstrate their individuality in the break, were members of the team of Rock Steady Crew. It was created in 1879 by two bboys (the so-called dancing break dance) Jimmy D and Jojo. One of the most prominent b-beats, Richard Colon, nicknamed Crazy Legs, made a significant contribution to the variety of dance elements and the development of complex acrobatic techniques of break dance. Also thanks to his talent, he promoted the popularization of dances and the spread of the term b-boy (b-boy).

The peak of the popularity of hip-hop dance direction fell on the first half of the 80s, when the films “Breakin” and “Beat street” riveted the attention of young people.

Graffiti - This is another aspect of hip-hop culture that cannot be ignored. The word itself comes from the Greek word "Graphein" - "write", and from the Italian "Graffito" - "scratch." The modern understanding of this phenomenon is connected with the modern inhabitants of megalopolises with painted front doors and fences, elevators and walls of houses, on which literally all free space can be filled with incomprehensible and sometimes too well understood phrases and words.

It is believed that the first inscription in the style of graffiti, more precisely, in its modern sense, was made then by a young resident of New York in the 60s of the 20th century. He painted with his name Julio 204 (204 - street number) the subway of his native city, but he did not bother with trifles, and soon residents of all parts of the city learned about the existence of a person with the pseudonym Julio 204. This idea was soon picked up by another young resident of the same city, the 17-year-old Greek Demitrios, who also left his "tags" "Taki 183" (tag - this is how the inscription or pseudonym is denoted) in all parts of New York. This time it did not go unnoticed, and one journalist sought out the young man to interview him and find out the purpose for which he made these inscriptions. The answer to this question, he stated in the article "Taki 183 spawns pen pals", which was the first dedicated to graffiti.

Soon, the youth began to actively paint all the objects they had seen with their "tagami", and this phenomenon turned into a real movement, which hip-hop graffiti began to call.

One of the objects enjoying the greatest attention and love of the writers was the train. Many groups preferred one metro line to another, depending on their route, the quality of the wagon coverage, and the number of passengers their creations could see. The latter was the most important, since the whole hip-hop culture is based on mass and publicity. Fame among the population was appreciated by representatives of all directions.

Clothing style in hip-hop culture

Hip-hopers dress in baggy suits, sneakers, baseball caps, which corresponds to the free spirit and lifestyle of the adherents of this culture. It is believed that this style is derived from the prison uniform, which was specially made large, so that it fit a prisoner of any physique.

The most "advanced" hip-hoppers wear a lot of jewels in the form of chains, earrings, gold dental crowns, etc.

Hello .
Today I would like to tell you about dance styles of hip hop culture.
Hip Hop is a cultural movement that originated among the working class of New York on November 12, 1974.
DJ Afrika Bambaataa first mentioned five subsections of hip-hop culture: emsing (MCing), DJing (DJing), breaking (breaking), graffiti (graffiti writing) and knowledge (a certain philosophy of things).
Other elements include beatboxing, slang and hip-hop fashion.

Originating in the southern parts of the Bronx, in the 1980s, hip-hop became a part of youth culture, developing itself in many countries around the world. In the late 1990s, hip-hop gradually became a part of the music industry from street culture, having a direct sharp social direction, and by the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, the subculture became “fashionable.” The place for business and, of course, distribution to the masses appeared. However, despite all the pathos and damage that hung around hip-hop, there are a lot of figures who still continue its main line - a protest against inequality and injustice, appeal to the authorities and to society ...
Hip-hop, as such, is divided into many directions.
But we will talk about dance styles such as Breakdance, Hip-Hop (New Style, Old School, La, etc.), Locking and Papping, Crump, C-Walk. All of them are part of the numerous hip-hop culture. Also in each style there is a lot of subsections and its own subculture.

Brakedance  - dance has grown into a whole culture, which includes many of their own sub-styles and elements.

Break began for the first time to dance on the streets of the western regions of New York, in the early seventies. There is a theory that

James Brown pushed young people from the ghetto to create a new style of dance. He is considered the founder of funk. Influenced by bboing

Uprock, which is a dance struggle in which the dancers do not touch each other, staging a struggle. It was usually used by street gangs in battles (battles) to resolve the issue, who is better and better.

At first, the break was considered a street culture, one can even say an underground culture. They were not put into anything, they were considered just garbage, but these children from the ghetto proved that they were more than rebels and criminals, as the public considered them. Rock Steady Crew took a place in the history of breaking. They raised a break to a new level. It was Crazy Legs from Rock Steady who invented such popular movements as backspin and windmill (also known as Gelik). Puerto Ricans with their capoeira chips, including many friezes / tricks, also made a great contribution to the development of boeing.

Hip-hop and funk have always been close, including thanks to James Brown.
The dance styles of these cultures are no less closely related than the music industry itself. If modern rappers have moved away from the funk style, then breaking and locking are still connected. Many consider locking a part of breaking, although this is far from the case.
In order to understand what and how, let's talk to you about the most basic style of the family Funk Styles, locking.

Locking  - one of the few areas of dance, the ancestor of which can be determined.

He is Don Campbell.
He was born in St. Louis and spent his childhood in Los Angeles.
Once having received from his friend several useful lessons in different dance styles, Don tried to demonstrate his skills at the disco. There he began to dance, showing the elements of various dances, which his friend taught. But everything mixed up in his head, and he froze from time to time, deciding what to do next. To Don's surprise, people liked it, and everyone applauded him. To the extent that Sam Williams, one of the college’s best dancers, gave him the nickname “campbell-lock” (lock), for his unrivaled style. Don decided to experiment and develop a dance with "locks". As a result, having reached a certain level, he received an invitation from the same Sam to the dance competition, where he took the 5th place out of 15 participants.

He did not try to remove his faults. On the contrary, he presented flaws as virtues, but he proclaimed the main goal of his dance a positive and a smile. So, various comic poses were added to the castles, which gave their zest in comparison with other numerous dancing styles that the audience liked.
The promotion was helped by the Don Cornelius show - Soul Train. It was the central dance show on US television. Just one of the programs won by Don Campbell! This was the beginning of the true locking movement.
Many street teams adopted locking themselves in the arsenal. The 70s are those years in which there was a struggle of dance styles. Created more and more styles that are no longer remembered. Locking entered the arsenal of bi-battles, in order to hit and win rivals, and they began to dance as a "top break".
I completely forgot to say about "Funk Styles". It is definitely worth learning that the direction Funk Styles appeared in the second half of the 70s in Los Angeles (California).
Initially, Funk Styles includes 2 styles. This is popping and locking. After, with the development of dance styles began to enter: electric-boogie, he's Electric Boogaloo (waving), robot, king-tat, animation.
In fact, it is very difficult to say what is what and what has gone. Some say that the Robot is an independent style, others that it is a Popping style. Some say that waving is also a popping litter, others that it’s the same as an electric boogie who, by the way, is correctly called Electrc Boogaloo, which in turn appeared as a pseudo-style that was invented by people who wanted to dance Popping, but not knowing what it is. Others in general throw everything into hip hop. The dance community seems to be arguing, who breathes louder. Numerous disputes did not lead to anything, but it’s not for me to judge what is there anything. But nevertheless, there is a deathless gratitude to those people who still gave us all of this, and still in 21st century, many practice these styles and their philosophy.

Hip-hop  - based in the black quarters of America. The dance technique and his emotional attitude protested against social inequality, and was called the old hip hop school  (Old school). But over time, everything changes and the social situation of blacks as well. Loved by many dance acquires new features, this style is part of the era of the New School (New school). This is how the new style of hip-hop dance - New Style.

New Style. he's Freestyle.
He was different from the old school in that it included many movements of other dance styles. He easily gets on with such styles as: Break-Dance, Waiving and many others, borrowing from them all new dance moves. Numerous turns, low jumps, quality and even top break. All this gives the performer a wide choice of actions, therefore the main weapon of the New Style dancer is the ability to improvise. Hip-hop dance training often begins with New Style, it is easy and pleasant to assimilate, the whole dance depends on imagination, on the ability to find new elements and combine the incompatible. This is pure freestyle.

LA Style.
It should not be confused with New Style, there is a big difference. LA Style appeared in Los Angeles and is a kind of "hip-hop", but with more emphasis on performance compared to New Style. The main difference of LA Style was not the individuality of the dancer, which is manifested in his vision and sense of music, and improvisation, but the manifestation of pure choreography in this kind of dance. Such a feature was the reason that LA Style is often used in music videos, during performances of the show, variety platforms. If almost all types of club and street dances are strong with their improvisation, then LA Style, on the contrary, presupposes the accuracy and beauty of the movements. Connections, well-learned memorized skaters, etc. In our time, almost no one music video can not do without this style.

Crump  (Krump) - dance is based on free,   energetic and even aggressive movements with arms, legs, head, chest ...

He originated in the southern regions of Los Angeles.
Crump is actually an abbreviation. It stands for Kingdom Radically Uplifted Might Praise.

Kingdom  - the kingdom. This is our inner world in dance. Our feelings, our emotions, our thoughts are all in this "kingdom."

Radically  - root. This is what is present in man from birth. When ordinary people look at dancers, they often mistakenly think that they will not be able to. Each person can release his spirit and feel his power. You just have to listen to yourself and believe in yourself.

Uplifted  - rise. This is what gives you a dance. When we dance, we wind our emotional state, raising the strength of our spirit and faith in ourselves.

Might  - power in all its manifestations. It can be the power of a warrior fighting in battle, and the power of a monk who is at rest or even the power of animal aggression inside us, any power of self-confidence expressed through dance. By the way, this is a kind of kramp substrates.

Praise - praise, praise. Inside, everything shouts: “Yeah-hh! I did it!
The main thing is to show all this power and will in the dance.
In fact, there are many uprock movements in this style, C of the wolf, even tiktonika. He is very expressive and energetic. The battles about Kramp can be easily confused with a fight because the dance itself is aggression, it is a struggle that is not rarely a physical one.

Break dance, of course, is directly related to hip-hop culture, but break dance rappers rarely dance. Break is difficult to learn only for a bright and cool image ..
And in the distant 70s in the suburbs of Los Angeles Compton, rappers first began to dance C-walk.

C-walk It was a virtuoso, improvised work of feet, sharp and fast.
At the beginning of 80 C-Walk was used as a symbolic dance of the rappers gang Crips. Actually it was then that Crip Walk got its name. Creeps used these original leg movements in order to portray their name or give gangster signs and so on.
They wrote down the name of the opposing gang Bloods and crossed it out, thereby demonstrating their superiority. In response to this, the main enemy gang, the Bloods, invented a similar dance for themselves. The main difference of B-Walk is only in the participation of the hands. At the end of the 90s, Crip Walking’s movement became part of the basic elements of hip-hop. Today this dance is known as Crip Walk and has two types: Clown Walk is a faster style with the addition of entertainment performance styles, and the Crown Walk is a synthesis of the Crip Walk and the movements of the Clown Walk.
Gradually, the wolf originally emerged as a set of gangster, clan elements and symbols evolved into a very extensive and interesting dance of hip hop culture.

... I am afraid no articles can show the whole essence of the philosophy of thinking of this culture. It should be understood in what years hip-hop appeared. It was a difficult time, especially in the ghetto areas. Street gangs were tired of blood and went to the world to avoid bloodshed. The dances themselves and the development appeared, later on its evolution. Society did not accept anything from blacks. They were despised and humiliated. People from childhood accustomed to aggression in their direction, of course, showed it in response. C-walk was outlawed (yes, it was), street dancers were chased away. They were taken by the police and taken to the polling stations, God knows what the attitude and the beatings. A black teenager living in the ghetto, seeing it all will not be a quiet citizen of this country. They went out ... took to the streets! There were riots, there was blood, there were gangs and crime, but there were also simple innocent people who grew up in the ghetto area and who were loved.

They proved that the street was their home and deserved respect. They showed that the blacks were not gangsters, as everyone called them. James Brown, Martin Luther King and other famous personalities fought for the rights of blacks and won.
Epoch passed. Many do not understand what all this evolution of dance cost. A modern dancer should know the history, should realize what all these people have gone through so that he would dance in hip-hop culture, listen to rap, draw graffiti, perform boxing and just live free from all prejudices.
Before choosing a dance style, you need to understand the essence of this dance.
Dance ... It is you who put your soul into it, otherwise it is just a set of elements and movements. There is no dance without a soul. There is no progress without respect. There is no future without history ......

I wrote briefly about the dance styles of hip hop culture. This is for the reader to get a general overview of the dance culture and general concepts. In subsequent articles, I will go deeper and tell the story of each dance. Past, present and future. Modern problems of dance culture and ways of development in dance ...

Do rappers really have a reason to consider themselves cool. They got the money, women, cars and the opportunity to freely bummer. For most of them, this is the ultimate dream. Tame a fierce rapper for an intelligent man - just spit. Act in accordance with the principles of the rapper - and do with it what you want.

Instead of the beginning, I offer you three facts from modern musical life.

  • Fact one : today the most popular character in the world of show business is Eminem. A white rapper who collects full stadiums anywhere in the world and sells discs unprecedented even for hip-hop editions, despite the fact that their content can drive a well-bred citizen to mind. Or maybe because of this. The fact that Eminem is rude, stupid and unpleasant in communication, almost everyone acknowledges. But buy CDs and go to concerts.
  • Fact two:   the most successful producer, who, in fact, brought Eminem to the top, is Dr. Dre. The black rapper, who beat himself from the bottom, organized two recording studios, dug out a dozen of African-American musical nuggets and released two albums that put all of America on his ears. A rare example of how a person with great success combines his own playing with production.
  • Fact three:   The most touring team in 1999, 2000 and the first half of 2001 is Limk Bizkit. The band, which last year had to cancel their performance in Australia at the Big Day Out festival just because there were too many people listening to them. Local authorities could not guarantee the safety of fans. Limr Bizkit is a white team playing with a fair amount of rap that has repeatedly stated that it cannot imagine itself without hip-hop.

In the US, rap has been selling much better than rock for several years now. They are used to this situation and, in general, are not surprised. But what is surprising is that the black music of the American slums has conquered Europe, Asia, Australia and the rest of the world, except Antarctica.

Sex, Drugs & Rock’n’roll

In the good old eighties everything in the music world was clear and understandable - for those who like to think hard and Michael Jackson with Madonna for those who like to dance. Cutlets separately - flies separately. Light music, in general, did not require anything special. It should be rhythmic, pleasant to the ear, and the performer (preferably) - pleasant to the eyes. Rock is another thing. From time immemorial, rock has offered a way of life, a style of behavior, and its own philosophy, which is well-known even among citizens very far from rock. These are the famous “Sex, drugs & rock’n’roll” (“Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll”), which, as they say, during the times of our long-haired parents ruled the progressive world.

In our crazy time, everything is mixed up. Madonna and Michael Jackson from cheerful, not burdensome musicians turned into significant and solid figures, monuments to themselves. The rock veterans quietly became satisfied with life, people were tied up with drugs and more and more matrimonial preferred sex.

And as if this was not enough, like the hell out of the box, hip-hop jumped out, which managed to breathe new life into music for the feet and reanimate music for the mind. And this is the secret of his success. Chertik, referred to as hip-hop, managed to combine in itself almost everything that was needed from the music of the progressive twentieth century.

Music for sex maniacs

A supportive listener finds even more drugs, sex and rock and roll in hip-hop than in rock and roll. Those wishing to familiarize themselves with the erotic fantasies of rappers immediately refer to the album “Back For The First Time” Ludacris ’Def Jam South. Pay special attention to the song “What’s Your Fantasy”. Even the most eloquent of the white-skinned journalists in life so picturesquely does not explain to you the delights of sex on the bookshelf and in other seemingly little adapted places for this. Therefore, I do not even dare to translate or retell content.

In order to adequately convey the erotic fantasies of rappers, you need to be born a black boy in some Harlem and from the age of five peep through the keyhole for the orgies of older brothers and sisters. In other words, you need to be born a rapper. Against the background of this extreme, the half-censured boast of Jimmy Pop from The Bloodhound Gang seems just like a holiday. If the aforementioned applied to only one composition, one album or one musician, it would not be because of what to make a garden. But confess that around the black rappers there is an aura of something forbidden and indecent. Maybe hip-hop blacks themselves cultivate this suspicion. Most likely, it even flatters them.

As a result, when Britney Spears on the screen with a bare navel and cute boys is pop and idiocy. And when on the same screen Lady Luck with the same bare navel and African-American boys, this is a den and a bad example for minors. Because white-skinned parents, producers and politicians do not have a very good idea of what exactly is happening with Lady Luck with her boys, but they suspect the worst. They suspect that someone has the courage to realize their most outspoken fantasies. So hip-hop becomes music for sex maniacs.

Music for drug addicts

Drugs, as the second component of the philosophy of rock and roll, pursue musicians for a long time and hard. In the press, unpleasant stories about musicians and drugs pop up every now and then. That Whitney Houston with the forbidden cargo at the border, the Blink-182 too frankly got kosyachok in a public place. Not to mention the Rolling, Lou Reed, Eric Clapton and other rock veterans in the glorious young years. And hip-hop did not discover America here. But never before have drugs become such a mass phenomenon among musicians. After all, the stories of the characters of rap are similar to each other, like two drops of water, and look something like this. A slum boy, naughty parents, gangster friends, drugs, rap in the streets, left recording, Dr. Dre, a decent studio, an album, a lot of money, ponty, lots of drugs, a fight with colleagues, a morgue. However, a prison is possible instead of a morgue, and girls have recently come across instead of boys. In short, listen to Memрhis Bleek, and everything will become very clear.

Music for free

Perhaps the most attractive feature of hip-hop is that everything is possible in the hip-hop world. You can shoot at nightclubs and squash weapons in the street, like Puff Daddy. You can swear and constantly keep bulging middle fingers on both hands, like Eminem. You can choose any woman in show business, invite her on a date and then vilify her at all angles, like Fred Durst. You can order a platinum necklace with diamonds in the shape of your own name and wear them on your chest like Nellie. And then hire a huge bodyguard so that their colleagues would not steal the necklace. You can dress in red velvet, gather a yard around you, declare yourself a king, and all others be jesters, like Andre, the leader of OutKast. You can go into otherworldly worlds and write music, which captures the spirit, like RZA. You can do all this even if you are a woman, like Eve and Lady Luck.

In the world of hip-hop, anything is possible, because you are young, yet full of energy, you are bathed in money and not burdened with morality, you yourself got out of such an ass that moralists never dreamed of. And you are so clever and free that any of the moral ethics will not understand you anyway. This is a free retelling of “Ride With Me” from Nelly's super popular “Country Grammar” album.

Music for the coolest

Last year, Mr ODB rapper played in New York with The Wu-Tang Clan. In the hall and around the stage there was a considerable number of police officers, as well as at any rap event. At that time, the incident was that Mr ODB was wanted for a whole heap of crimes against morality. But gentlemen, the police for some reason did not dare to remove it from the scene. They say, because ten thousand hip-hop fans who gathered to listen to Mr ODB are too much even for the New York police.

As a result, the rapper was still arrested in the parking lot near McDonald's, where a glorious musician gave autographs to the kids. And when this happened, the West Coast authorities grappled with the East authorities because of who would be the first to deal with our friend ODB. If you really cool ... Well, then you yourself know.

Now I will write a terrible thing for well-bred citizens: rappers really have a reason to consider themselves cool. Not because they swear or shoot anyone. But because they made themselves. They started from scratch and achieved what they consider important for themselves. They got the money, women, cars and the opportunity to freely bummer. For most of them, this is the ultimate dream. It’s as if John Lennon really convinced people to make love, not war, and Bob Dylan discovered the laws of perfect harmony. If a person has achieved what he aspired to, isn’t this a reason for pride? The fact is that values are relative. They each have their own. And the ways of expressing pride are also individual.

Dance music

The flowering of hip-hop coincided with the next revival of discos. After the glorious rave ceased to be the total passion of advanced youth, dancing at night began to turn into an element of summer recreation. Therefore, discos flourished exclusively in resort towns, where people come for two weeks to ottyagnyatsya in full, and the countries of Eastern Europe, where there was no nightlife at all for long, therefore no power is able to cool the ardor of dancing youth.

And in the cities of Western Europe and the United States, discos were rapidly inferior in popularity to stylish clubs with trendy interiors and sophisticated cocktails. In these institutions they did not dance, but simply communicated and enjoyed life. When hip-hop jumped out of the box, people started dancing again. At first, the rappers themselves began to move in rhythm. Then their African American fans. And then the white-skinned children of decent parents. Those who listen to Mystical still dance.

Music for the principal

Criminal inclinations of rappers do not at all indicate the absence of principles. They have principles, only they, like values, are their own and special. To behave correctly in relation to the women with whom you sleep is optional. But to push a turnip to a person who hugs your wife is a must. It’s possible to carry pop musicians, rock musicians, rap musicians from an enemy camp. Hurt the musicians from their own shop - it is impossible. They hold each other so tightly and help young talents as resolutely as they have never been in the world of rock, because this is also a principle. Tame a fierce rapper for an intelligent man - just spit. Act in accordance with the principles of the rapper - and do what you want with him. Some of the great and wise very well noticed that the principles successfully replace people's brains.

Music. Just music

Surprisingly, but true. In the hip-hop variety, real pearls are hidden. This is Music with a capital letter, penetrated by sharp feelings and written by very talented people. This is music, written contrary to all the dirt, in which rap and its figures were so thoroughly filled. The lovers of the alternative do not disdain her, she was chosen by Jarmusch for the film “The Way of the Samurai”. And this is primarily RZA.

Continue in the same vein could be very long. To say that rap is music for people who are satisfied with life, as well as for people who are dissatisfied with it. Music for lovers of new and music for conservatives. The secret of hip-hop popularity is that it is music for everyone. This is music for both ours and yours. It is believed that everyone can not please. But universal hip-hop proved that it is possible. You will say that the universality of hip-hop is at times similar to hooliganism. This is true. But they are not able to do it differently in the slums.
